Mountain Skills Plus Course Overview - 4 Days  

We’ll cover the full syllabus of the 2 Day Mountain Skills course and then put it all into practice on a 2 day mountain expedition. We’ll start with detailed planning, equipment and nutrition preparation before heading out. We’ll be living out of our rucksacks for the whole expedition and wild camping up high. We’ll introduce some basic rope techniques, night navigation and emergency procedures. 


What does a Mountain Skills Plus Course Cover? 

  • Mountain Skills - we start by covering the full content of the 2-day course
  • Expedition skills - Expedition food, nutrition and cooking. Camp management. Expedition equipment selection, use and care.
  • Hazards and emergency procedures - Environmental and water hazards. Search and evacuation procedures. Emergency shelter skills.
  • Safeguarding yourself with a rope - Rope selection and care. Appropriate knots and rope management. Anchor selection and setup. Using rope alone to protect descent.
  • Advanced navigation - Navigation techniques for night and poor visibility. Micro navigation techniques and route selection.


Who is the Mountain Skills Plus course for? 

This Mountain Skills Plus course is for anyone who is interested in exploring our mountains.  We hope you have some experience in the mountains, but it's not essential. 


Are you an aspiring Mountain Leader?  This is the ideal foundation course for you. We will introduce you to many of the skills covered in the 6 day Summer Mountain Leader course including expedition skills.

  • OS Map of the course area
  • Waterproof map case
  • Expedition Equipment  


Our courses run at the following locations:

  • Lake District - Keswick
  • Cairngorms - Aviemore
